How to give constructive feedback in teaching?

Feedback is the response of the onlookers/ users to a person or product over the performance of a particular task. It is based on surveys, and/ or opinions, ratings, comments, or other methods. And while the core motive of all feedback is to help make improvements, constructive feedback, (especially in teaching) is particularly that!

A constructive criticism/ feedback is something given with a positive intention, solely to support the individual. The aim behind it is to address the concerns so as to help the person identify the weaknesses and solutions for the same.

Feedback is all about listening carefully, analyzing, and then thinking of the best possible solution, in order to improve focus, results, and help one grow personally and professionally.

Why is constructive feedback important?

Research confirms that meaningful feedback to students by their teachers can greatly enhance learning and achievements, hence becoming an integral part of the learning process. This helps the students correct or confirm their learning practices and approaches, hence making it necessary to learn the right ways of feedback in teaching.

Especially now that online teaching has become usual, giving the right and timely feedback is one major way to help your students and also form a connection with them.

Feedback in teaching for students

How do you provide Constructive Feedback in Classroom?

1. Be specific

If your feedback isn’t specific it will be of little help to your students. So make sure that you let them know in detail and with precision exactly where they are going wrong or would need improvement. Your students need that from you so do not be vague. In short make sure that the feedback is educative, simple, and direct, explaining all the accuracies and inaccuracies.

Example: Instead of just saying “be more active”, tell them exactly what tasks they are to undertake and complete.

2. The sooner, the better

Getting the right feedback at the right time can take you a long way. Studies have shown that students who have received immediate feedback show more improvement than otherwise. It’s more effective as students respond more positively and remember the experiences better, for longer and more confidently.

Hence, point out whatever you want at the moment rather than waiting for a few days or perhaps PTMs or other meetings.

3. Say it nicely

Don’t condemn, humiliate or publicly embarrass them, rather say it most politely and nicely that you can. One good way is to sandwich it between compliments.

Point out the good, the improvements, while letting them know of that one thing that they can get better at.

Online tutoring already cuts down the connection by quite a bit and hence might result in, putting across the point differently from how you intended it to be.

4. Give it during a one-on-one meeting

It’s always better to speak to them one-on-one as this also helps you understand their perspective better. Being given feedback in the public might often make them feel embarrassed and may result in them rebelling. So it’s always best to counsel them one-on-one, understand where they come from, and explain things in a better manner.

5. Give examples

It's best to give examples of how you expect a task to be done, or for them to behave. Show them a sample of the ideal test sheets or assignments. However, this doesn’t give you the license to compare students amongst one another for that will only further lower their morale.

6. Keep track and acknowledge efforts

Once you give them the feedback, keep an eye and see how well they take it and whether or not they improve. And if and when they do, make sure to acknowledge it and appreciate them for the same for this encourages them to right themselves.

7. Allow them to give feedback too

Teach them how to give the right feedback to one another and you too. And then do take it from them and right yourself (especially now when you yourself are on a new journey with online tutoring). As not only would this teach them to give constructive feedback, but also help you understand their views about you. Which would give you an opportunity to better yourself. And most importantly when they see you follow those it will encourage them to do so too.

Presently, with things having gone online, the act of giving feedback to students can still work effectively, without any hindrance in this process.
